Facial ultrasound assessment in Brighton & Hove
Facial ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of selected structures beneath the skin. It can provide additional information about facial anatomy and previous aesthetic treatments, helping us make more informed clinical decisions.
At EIRA Clinics in Hove, we use facial ultrasound as an assessment tool. The scan is guided by your concerns, treatment history and the specific area we need to examine.
Assessing previous aesthetic treatments
If you’ve had dermal filler or other aesthetic treatments in the past, you may be unsure what remains beneath the skin or how a previous treatment relates to a current concern.
Where appropriate, ultrasound may help us locate and assess visible filler deposits, examine the surrounding tissues and investigate areas of swelling or irregularity. What we can identify depends on factors including the product used, its location and the quality of the images. Not every product or concern can be reliably identified by ultrasound.
You don’t need to know exactly which product was used or when, although any treatment records you have can be helpful.
Supporting future treatment decisions
Ultrasound may also be useful when assessing an area before a proposed aesthetic treatment. It can help us examine selected anatomical structures and consider whether previous treatment or other findings may affect the plan.
A scan does not automatically mean that further treatment is needed or appropriate. We’ll discuss the findings with you and explain any limitations or next steps.
What to expect at your appointment
We’ll begin by discussing your concerns, medical history and previous treatments. A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld probe is moved over the area being assessed.
The scan is non-invasive and does not use ionising radiation. We’ll explain what we can see, what remains uncertain and whether further assessment or referral is appropriate.
Facial ultrasound is not a substitute for a full medical assessment. If you develop sudden or severe pain, skin colour changes or visual symptoms following an injectable treatment, seek urgent medical assessment rather than waiting for a routine ultrasound appointment.

Facial ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of selected structures beneath the skin. At EIRA Clinics, we use a Clarius L20 handheld ultrasound device to support a focused assessment of your facial anatomy or a specific concern.

It can sometimes help locate and assess filler deposits, including filler placed some time ago. What we can identify depends on the product, its location and the scan findings. Ultrasound cannot reliably identify every product or establish exactly when it was injected.

No. You’re welcome to book an assessment even if you don’t know which product was used. Any previous treatment records are helpful, but they aren’t essential.

Ultrasound findings can contribute to that discussion, but a scan alone cannot determine whether dissolving is necessary or appropriate. We’ll consider your symptoms, examination, treatment history and preferences before discussing possible next steps.

No injections are involved in the scan itself. We apply ultrasound gel and move a handheld probe over the area being assessed. You may feel light pressure from the probe.

We’ll explain the findings and their limitations, and discuss whether further assessment, referral or a separate treatment appointment is appropriate. An ultrasound assessment does not guarantee a definitive diagnosis or treatment on the day.
